Baba Chews Bar and Eatery is a cool Peranakan Restaurant in Katong, right in front of Katong Square. It serves up some really good Peranakan food that fits right into this neighbourhood.
Ambience, Service and the Staff
Housed in a low-rise building that blends perfectly into the Katong Streetscape, Baba Chew’s is prettier on the inside than it is on the outside… and that’s saying something.
The bar is adorned with an intricate Peranakan tile pattern that reinforces the vibe of the neighbourhood. The tables are sturdy and accompanied by amply upholstered chairs.
I had made my booking on Chope. We were swiftly seated and directed to our tables.
The restaurant has been well maintained. The staff are courteous, helpful, and take good care of diners.
I’ve been here a few times, and tend to go for the beef rendang, with the Jap Chye and some rice. This is generally more than enough for a party of 2.
Among other items that I have eaten here are the Chicken Rendang Lasagne and the blackened fish and chips.
I can definitely recommend the beef rendang which is cooked to perfection and served in a very generous portion size. The chicken rendang lasagne will satisfy hearty appetites without being overwhelming.
The Price Point
Baba Chews is a pleasant restaurant that doesn’t hit the hip-pocket too badly. Generally speaking, a meal for 2 usually sets us back around $50 with no alcoholic beverages. This is great value for a restaurant of this calibre in this part of town. One can also get Chope Vouchers that will bring down the bill – it’s worth checking that they’re applicable to specials.
The Final Verdict
I’ve been coming to Baba Chews since 2019, and love going back there regularly. They have a nice vibe, a great selection of food, excellent service and a great price point. I’ll continue to go back, and will recommend this as a destination to chill with friends over drinks, lunch or dinner.
