We had walked past Coucou several times. It’s a Swiss Restaurant in Tanjong Pagar and somewhat unique; there aren’t too many of them in Singapore. This weekend, we finally got around to visiting.
The Ambience, Service and Staff
As Singapore continues to emerge out of Covid-19 restrictions, we were continuing to support our F&B establishments.
Coucou is located on a stretch of Craig Road in Tanjong Pagar in a set of three shop houses, right next to Bearded Bella. We were a party of 4. Reservations can be made via Chope and Quandoo (use the referral code DEBASHIS5259JNW for 500 bonus points on your first reservation when signing up via iOS or Android). We were the first visitors on the morning. The restaurant quickly filled up. We were led to our table and served water immediately by the very professional and friendly staff who took really good care of us throughout our meal. Menus were provided at the table.
Coucou has a lovely interior with the vibe of being in a Swiss Chalet. As you enter, the wall on the right is covered in cuckoo clocks (which thankfully do not all start chiming at the same time), and has a seating area in the back that is under a diffused skylight. They also have an alfresco dining area in the front.
The Food
We ordered a half platter of cold cuts as our starters. The mains are served with a side of your choice. We ordered a rosti to share, the sea bass with salad, the trout with salad, the Cordon Bleu chicken with asparagus, and the Pork Tenderloin with home made fries.
Our starters came out within minute accompanied by some bread and olive oil. There was a selection of shaved hams and beef with a couple of varieties of cheese and some pickles and onions. The staff kept an eye on our progress and brought out the mains as we finished the starter.
The mains were all beautifully presented and served hot. They had clearly done a great job in timing the preparation and cooking of the items. Both fish dishes were served with salads with dressing on the side. The sea bass was particularly well done, topped with tomatoes and onions and a side of celeriac mousse.
The cod fish was served in three pieces and topped with capers. The chicken was stuffed with cheese and ham, offering a comforting flavour. The pork loin came in three pieces, topped with mushrooms and a mushroom sauce, and was cooked to tender perfection. The rosti was served piping hot and had a rich, buttery flavour. The portions were very generous, and we didn’t have room for dessert at the end our meal.
The Price Point
Our meal for four came up to around $230. For a restaurant in this location and the kind of food, its a little higher than what you’d normally pay, and is made up for by the ambience and the service.
The Final Verdict
Coucou is a unique experience in part of Singapore that has a lot of choice for food. It’s the sort of place that one goes to to enjoy a really high quality meal and some great service in a charming environment. This is a great place for casual meals with people who you care about. We were well looked after and would definitely go back!
