SLATE is a café that I discovered on the morning that I visited Clinton Street Baking Co. and is also on Purvis Street, directly underneath King and the Pawn. It’s a trendy looking café with a predominantly black façade.
Ambience, Service and the Staff
SLATE is in the lower floor of a traditional shophouse that has preserved its old façade. The café itself it modern with blue accents against black “slate” tables, and brass cutlery. Bench seats on one side are complemented by circular booths on the other which are perfect for gathering with friends.
We made our reservations via Chope. Being a popular place, I’d recommend that one book ahead. They will only accept up to 5 people via Chope. For larger parties, you’ll need to call the restaurant.
We were a party of 4 and were quickly seated by the friendly and efficient staff. The menus are electronic accessed via a QR code on the table.
The Food
They had a special running – a pulled beef rib sandwich served with and egg and fries. We also ordered “The Lot” – their version of a big breakfast, the Quintessential Smashed Avocado, and Chicken and Pancakes. We complemented our food with a couple of coffees, some black tea and lemonade.
The beverages came out very quickly – within 10 minutes – with food about 5 minutes behind. Their portions are generous but not overwhelming, and are served in modern flatware that is just the right size.
The big breakfast is true to its name, served with beans and corn, with a generous serving of bacon, eggs and sausages. The avocado was fresh and beautifully prepared and presented. The pulled beef rib sandwich was perfect, filling and tasty. The Chicken and Pancakes took the cake, served with a peppercorn maple syrup. Without a doubt – perhaps the best Chicken and Pancakes that I have ever eaten.
The Price Point
Our bill came up to just over $130 for 4 people, and included beverages. We got a $10 discount by using a Chope Voucher. Great value for this part of town, and particularly for the quality of food and ambience.
The Final Verdict
SLATE is great for breakfast, brunch or lunch on the weekends. It is also open for dinner and has a broad selection of alcoholic beverages. It has an awesome vibe for drinks and dinner after work.
This is a great place to have a casual meal with friends. I will definitely be back!
