The Brewing Ground

This is a little gem that is hidden away in Singapore’s East. It is in a complex called The Yards which is in a building that used to be Telok Kurau Primary School. Singapore’s first Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew, used to study here.

Ambience, Service and the Staff

The Brewing Ground is on the ground floor of the Yards. There is parking on the grounds, and the area is served by several buses. The restaurant accepts walk-ins only on weekends and public holidays. They do take reservations through their website on weekdays.

We stood in line for a few minutes and were quickly seated at a table indoors. The café has alfresco dining available and is particularly popular for dog owners (and there are plenty of them). The cafe has a freshly whitewashed industrial decor with sturdy and comfortable wooden furniture. The staff provided us with printed menus and we placed our orders at the counter. Throughout our meal, they were attentive and thoroughly professional.

There’s lot of natural light, with seating available for couples, small groups and families.

The Food

We ordered the Avocado and Ricotta Tartine, and built a breakfast of scrambled eggs, brioche toast, sausages, and hash browns. We also ordered an iced cappuccino with oat milk, and a hot mocha.

Our food came out first. In spite of the café operating at nearly full capacity, they had food on our table within 10 minutes. Coffees followed shortly after.

The tartine was very tasty. The avocado was fresh, and was offset by the flavour of the ricotta cheese, served on a piece of coarse sourdough. The scrambled eggs were well made, the sausage was well cooked, and the hash browns took the cake. Coffee was full bodied without being overwhelming.

The Price Point

Our bill came up to just under $60 for 2 people. This is great value and truly worth the meal, the ambience and the service.

The Final Verdict

Rating: 5 out of 5.

The Brewing Ground is a lovely place for breakfast, brunch and lunch. It is in a predominantly residential area in Telok Kurau and hence tends to be frequented by people who live in this area. Getting here can be a bit tricky, but it is totally worth it.
