We were looking for something new today, and chanced upon The Secret Garden by Zeekri in Kampong Glam.
Ambience, Service and the Staff
This charming little restaurant has an arboreal theme, and is housed in a conservation shophouse on Baghdad Street in Kampong Glam.
We made reservations via Quandoo (use the referral code DEBASHIS5259JNW for 500 bonus points on your first reservation when signing up via iOS or Android).
The dining area is on the upper floor that one accesses via a staircase. It’s a cosy little environment, with a green theme dominating the setting. It has some particularly elaborate artwork on one of the walls.
As we walked in, we were greeted by the friendly staff, and led upstairs to our table. We were seated, provided with menus, and served with water immediately. The staff were courteous and attentive and came to check on us regularly. The dining area was quite full by the time we walked in.
The Food
We were a party of two. We went with food alone on our visit. We ordered a French Fold (Galette), and the Secret Garden breakfast.
Service was quick. The galette was served first, arriving at table in about five minutes. The Secret Garden breakfast followed a few minutes later.
The galette was made of buckwheat flour, and come with cheese, mushrooms, spinach, and a sunny-side-up egg. It was surprisingly good, and the portion size is ample without being too large.
The TSG breakfast came with a snail chicken sausage, turkey bacon, ham, scrambled eggs, a salad, mushrooms, and toast. Again, this was really well-made, with a generous portion size that was not too big.
The Price Point
Our bill for two came to just under $34. Given that the portions are generous without being overwhelming, the quality food, and the location, this cafe offers excellent value.
The Final Verdict
The Secret Garden is a Muslim run establishment, where all food is halal certified. No pork products are served here. It’s a somewhat unique restaurant that is definitely worth visiting. It’s great for first dates, or meeting up with a small group of friends for a weekend breakfast or brunch. They offer excellent value for money in one of Singapore’s most charming neighbourhoods.
