Bike Shop? Check! Great ambience? Check! Quirky decor? Check! Great food? Check!
Wheeler’s Yard is a neighbourhood cafe with a theme that is quirky and has a lot of character. With a great menu for all meals, this is a cafe that has made it to my list of favourites!
Ambience, Service and the Staff
Wheeler’s Yard sits along the park connector and canals, and is a true neighbourhood cafe. I’ve always walked into this cafe, and have found seating, though it has never been packed. This might have something to do with the sheer amount of space that this cafe has.
The entrance to the café is through a bike shop (which is sadly due to move out in early 2020) with lots a quirky bicycles on display. The café itself is housed inside a warehouse building which has been tastefully converted.
There is ample space in the air-conditioned indoor area, which is supplemented by covered alfresco dining, and outdoor open air dining which are great spots for enjoying a drink with friends on a balmy Singapore evening.
The staff are polite, courteous and helpful. They’re quick to take orders, and happy to explain what’s on the menu and help with recommendations.
The seats are comfortable. The interior has a combination of exposed ceilings, exposed brick work, bicycle displays, and quirky memorabilia which lends a fun and relaxed atmosphere to this café.
The Food
I’ve been here on several occasions for breakfast, brunch, and dinner. On my most recent visit, I stopped by here while on a bike ride for dinner. I’d ordered some bar bites – the chicken wings and the spiced cauliflower. Both items came out quickly, and were served hot and fresh.
The spiced cauliflower is particularly good, lending a slight zing and complemented with a sprinkling of toasted sesame.
I’ve had desserts here too, and they have a consistently high standard.
The Price Point
For my light meal of bar bits, I spent just over $20 which is a decent price for a café of this calibre in this neighbourhood, and that offers this sort of ambience.
This is definitely worth it, given the experience and the quality of food.
The Final Verdict
Wheeler’s Yard has remained one of my favourite theme cafés. It’s a little off the beaten path and therefore takes a bit of effort to get to. However, this means that you’re generally not going to be competing with large crowds for seating. They have a broad selection of food that is of consistently high quality, a great atmosphere, and offer a unique experience that few other places (if any) in Singapore can offer.
