If you’re looking for a good Indian restaurant in the East Coast area, Zaffron Kitchen offers a great destination. It’s in the centre of Katong and is on a major bus route.
Ambience, Service and the Staff
Zaffron Kitchen faces East Coast Road. I have visited it several times. It accepts reservations via Chope. During our latest visit, we walked in at 8 p.m. and were seated straight away. The very efficient and professional staff served us water and provided us with an electronic menu where you can place your order to be delivered with the kitchen.
As you enter Zaffron Kitchen, the smell of the food will greet your nostrils. They have an open kitchen that flows into the dining area. The restaurant has an area in the front that is separated from the kitchen, and a semi-private area in the main hall that is separated by lattice wall. The restaurant is simply decorated in ethnic tones with sturdy and comfortable seats.
The Food
We were a party of two, and ordered a starter sampler to begin with. This came out straight away. We followed this up with some Jeera Rice, Okra Masala, and Chicken Chettinad.
The sampler platter came with a couple of pakodas, papdi chaat with some chicken, and a bowl of bhelpuri – puffed rice with a sprinkling of spices and tamarind sauce. This is one of our favourites that we regularly get when we visit here. It’s mildly spicy and will get the taste buds stimulated for the main course.
The Jeera Rice is white rice that has been tossed with cumin seeds, and offers both flavour and texture. The chicken Chettinad is a South-Indian chicken dish that is seasoned with curry leaves and offers a full-bodied curry that is mildly spicy. It is served with two pieces of chicken and plenty of gravy. The Okra Masala is a mild concoction of the ladysfinger and bell peppers that accompanies the rest of the meal to offer balance.
Portions are adequate. We found that we left feeling satisfied without wastage, or of having overeaten.
The Price Point
Our bill came up to just around $55 for 2 people with no alcohol. By any standards for Indian food, this is good value for quantity, quality and ambience.
The Final Verdict
Zaffron Kitchen is great to have dinner with your family or catch up with friends and colleagues after work. They have plenty of seating, courteous and helpful staff, and great food at a great price point. This is one of my regular go-to-places that I keep going back to, and recommend to friends and colleagues regularly.
