It was Singapore National Day 2021, and we were not quite sure what we wanted to eat. We felt like something warm and wholesome and headed down to Funan to visit one of my all-time favourite Japanese holes-in-the-wall. That was a really long line outside, and we had to look for an alternative. That’s when we chanced upon Afuri.
Ambience, Service and the Staff
Afuri didn’t have much of a line outside it. It’s a nice little clean and well lit noodle bar on the lower level of Funan mall. We didn’t have any reservations and walked in. We were seated immediately by the friendly staff who provided us with menus. The restaurant has an automated ordering system using iPads.
The Food
We were a party of two. On the day, we were presented with a couple of promotions. We ordered a Ninniku Tonkatsu Ramen set which came with a side of four wing gyozas, and a drink (we got the milk tea). We also ordered the Yuzu Shiyo Ramen.
The drink came out first in about five minutes, followed by the plate of gyozas. The Yuzu Shiyo Ramen followed, and finally, the Ninniku Tonkatsu Ramen was served.
The gyozas were decent. They were a bit overdone, and this may have been a one-time thing. We were pleasantly surprised with the ramen. The Yuzu Shiyo Ramen had a slight citrus undertone and a light broth. The Ninniku Tonkatsu Ramen came with a slice of pork and a spicy paste which wasn’t overly spicy. This too had a lighter broth and didn’t weigh us down as normal ramen tends to do.
The milk tea was a tad sweet for my taste.
The Price Point
Our bill for two came to just under $40. This is reasonable value for ramen at this location.
The Final Verdict
Afuri is a decent ramen bar, where you get what you order. They offer a decent ramen with a lighter broth, and a well-lit clean environment. They have decent service. This is the sort of place that is great to grab a meal while on the go when shopping.
