Bao Makers

The Bao Makers has been on our list of places to visit for quite a while. Earlier today, we finally got around to visiting them for lunch.

Ambience, Service and the Staff

The restaurant is housed inside of one of the heritage listed shophouses in Singapore’s Tanjong Pagar district. It has a colourful green tiled exterior.

The interior of the restaurant is very modern and chic. The walls are a plain concrete, offset by tiles that have a slate texture to them. The lighting is done in brass, giving the interior an industrial yet warm feel.

The Bao Makers is open for lunch and dinner only. They open on the stroke of noon, and there was a small group of people waiting for them to open the doors when we arrived. We had made a reservation to Chope. We were greeted by the friendly staff who lead us to our table and provided us with menus.

The Food

The Bao Makers offer set lunches, and an à-la-carte menu. We opted to go with the set lunch which included three baos of our choice, iced citrus tea, and a salad and edamame. We ordered two sets accompanied by truffle fries. Our choice of baos were the chilli crab bao, the porky belly, salmon mentaiko, blackened chicken, and mala beef.

The drinks came out first within a couple of minutes, followed by the salad and the edamame. The edamame was served with the stalks still attached, which took away from the experience. The truffle fries followed next. It was a very large portion and was served hot. They were really tasty.

Then came the main course – two sets of three bars served in individual boxes. They’re beautifully presented.

We ranked the chilli crab the best. It was served in a crispy deep-fried man-tou. The mala beef and the blackened chicken were close behind, followed by the pork belly, and finally the salmon mentaiko.

The citrus tea helps cleanse the palate.

The Price Point

This meal for 2 came in at just over SGD50. This is great value for this location and the choice of restaurant.

The Final Verdict

Rating: 4 out of 5.

We loved our lunch at the Bao Makers and will definitely go back again. We recommend going with the à-la-carte selection of the powers of your choice. You can even walk in and partake of a couple of hours just as a snack during the course of the day.
