Birds of a Feather

Birds of a Feather is a groovy little restaurant and bar tucked away on Amoy Street in Singapore’s Central Business District. I visited here on a Wednesday afternoon with a friend to grab some lunch before Christmas.

Ambience, Service and the Staff

We were a party of 2 and made reservations via Chope.

We visited on a Wednesday afternoon at 12:30pm. The restaurant was already half full when we entered and peaked at about three-quarters by the time we left. We were seated at a table in the front and served with cold water by the professional staff. Menus were provided at the table. The menus are substantially large, leather bound, and offer both sharing sets, as well as individual portions.

Birds of the Feather’s exterior is understated and classy, and gives way to an interior that has a well stocked bar to the right, and comfortable group seating around couches and tables along the left. As you walk further in, you’re greeted by coffee table seating by a wine rack, and a large open dining area with a long central table. The restaurant is in a restored shop house with skylights providing access to natural daylight that complements the classy indoor lighting.

The Food

Food here is intended to be shared. We ordered the Find the Chicken (a Sichuan style popcorn chicken in Sichuan peppercorns), Baked Egpplant, and Pork Dumplings as our starters, and the Truffle Alfredo Orecchiette as our main. We just had water to drink, and one of our party ordered a Chinese Jasmine Mao Fong Tea. At the time of our order, the wait staffed confirmed with us that they’d bring out each item as it became ready.

The Baked Eggplant came out first in about 10 minutes offering an interesting mild taste offset with some mozzarella cheese bits and peppercorns. Next followed the Pork Dumplings served in a sage foam sauce over Sichuan chilli oil that needs to be mixed together. Not your average dumplings, and very satisfying. The Popcorn Chicken followed, covered in signature Sichuan Chillies and peppercorns, accented with peanuts that is perhaps the best tasting Sichuan Chicken that I have had. We discovered at this point that we had ordered too much. The Alfredo Orecchiette followed – perfectly cooked, and with an onsen egg that offered a rich flavour to complement the creamy texture.

The Price Point

We spent $115 between the two of us, and over ordered. We could probably have spent $30 less and still been quite full. This is decent value for a restaurant of this calibre in this location.

The Final Verdict

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Birds of a Feather is a really groovy place, and one which I will go back to again. Great for lunches on special occasions, business lunches, and dinner and drinks with friends. Highly recommended!
