Blu Kouzina

Dempsey Hill is Singapore’s go-to destination for fine dining. A friend of mine had told me about Blu Kouzina a while ago and I finally made it here last night.

Ambience, Service and the Staff

Dempsey Hill isn’t served by a train station. We drove here. Blu Kouzina is among the many very good restaurants in the area. We were a party of 2 and had made reservations via Chope. We were seated straight away by the friendly staff and provided with a large pitcher of cold drinking water and glasses. We’d requested indoor seating on the evening. However, they were a full house and only had alfresco dining available. Menus are accessible via a QR code.

The decor here is very bohemian. Restaurants in this area are converted colonial-style barracks with high roofs. Blue Kouzina’s exterior has an arboreal feel with lots of plants amidst the open verandahs that are cooled with large fans. The inside is decorated with an assortment of brick-a-brack and set up to feel like you may be seated in a happening Mediterranean market.

We flagged the staff down and placed our orders.

The Food

We started with a cocktail – their signature “Helen of Troy” which was sweet with undertones of lychee, and a decent degree of potency that will help relax one after a long week. Our starters were the watermelon salad, a plate of hummus and crispy pita bread. Both items came out within 5 minutes of our order. The watermelon salad was amazing. The portion was generous, the watermelon was sweet, and the feta cheese offered a contrast to the juicy fruit. The hummus was particularly good too – it offered a smooth texture and was laced with pomegranate seeds for a little sweetness and a bit of tangy texture. The crispy pita was was a bit too crispy for our taste, and we ended up ordering a plate of regular pita bread which was served hot, fresh, and laced with what appeared to be dukkah adding a mild spiciness to it.

For the main, we ordered a small kebab platter that came with 3 kebabs – one chicken, one lamb, and one beef skewer – and was served with grilled vegetables and a tomato paste. They were beautifully presented on a platter and cooked to perfection. The meats were moist, well cooked, and almost melted in your mouth. The potatoes were cooked to perfection, and the vegetables were slightly charred to offset their caramelization.

The Price Point

Our bill came up to just under $115 for 2 people. We used Chope vouchers. This is good value for the quantity and quality of food, the ambience, and the location of the restaurant.

The Final Verdict

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Blu Kouzina offers an awesome venue to meet with friends and coworkers, to celebrate special occasions, and for dates. It’s the sort of food that will appeal to palates of all kinds. I’d happily recommend them to anyone looking for something to appeal to a diverse list of attendees.
