Bread & Hearth

I’ve walked past Bread & Hearth at Katong V several times, and had made myself a mental note to try this place out. I finally got around to it this weekend.

Ambience, Service and the Staff

Bread & Hearth at Katong V is located in the atrium area of Level 2 as a permanent. installation. While the café doesn’t come with solid walls, it does have well demarcated boundaries lending itself a private and open feel. We hadn’t made reservations and walked in on a Sunday morning when it was reasonably busy. We seated ourselves at one of two vacant tables. They do take reservations through their website.

Their staff were attentive and, after cleaning our table, directed us to the electronically accessible menu.

The Food

We were in a bit of a rush. Orders are taken at the counter. We ordered the Avocado Toast with the Portobello mushroom, the Big Breakfast, and a café mocha.

At the time of ordering, I was told that the big breakfast would take about 20 minutes. I old the staff that were we on a schedule and she told me that she’d let the kitchen know.

Coffee came out in about 5 minutes. While beautifully presented, I have to admit that I have had better coffee elsewhere. It tasted a bit weak and flat. However, where they fell short on the coffee, they made up with on the food.

The Avocado Toast was served with a dukkah spread giving it a light spiced aroma that beautifully complemented the avocado, and was served with a generous serving of Italian salad and a large portobello mushroom cooked to perfection. The big breakfast was big without being overwhelming and came with well prepared double servings of baked eggs on portobello wrapped in bacon, ham, sausage, hash brown and a salad.

The Price Point

Our bill came up to just over $40 for 2 people. This is great value and truly worth the meal, as well as a pleasant, casual place for brunch.

The Final Verdict

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Bread & Hearth is a little hidden gem inside the Katong V mall which is great for a quick breakfast at a great price point. They all serve an array of pastries (which I am told are excellent) and breads which you can purchase to take back home.

This is a great place to stop by after a morning walk for breakfast or brunch, or to get a quick bite while you’re running errands in the area.

They do not charge GST or service charges.
