Fika

Fika is a cool little Swedish café on the intersection of Arab Street and Beach Road in Singapore’s Kampong Glam district.

Ambience, Service and the Staff

We were a party of five and had gathered here to celebrate a friend’s birthday. I had made a reservation via Google. I was greeted by the staff at the door who had my reservation marked out. They checked me in and led me to my table on the upper floor. Menus are on the table in the form of a QR code.

The restaurant has a Scandanavian minimalist decor, where all the furniture could have been from Ikea. It has lots of wooden tones against white, with pop artwork on the walls, and a book case with books for reading while you’re eating.

The restaurant charges a nominal $0.50 fee for water.

The staff were attentive and looked after us well.

The Food

We ordered the mushroom crepe, two chicken crepes, and the Swedish meatballs for our mains, along with the Grapefruit Mimosa, the the Cranberry Kiss, and a couple of caramel lattes.

Drinks came out first, taking about 5 minutes. Food followed shortly after – about 10 minutes later.

The crepes were very well done. The chicken was beautifully seasoned, and the crepes were soft without being too crispy. The mushroom crepe was similarly well made, and the melted cheese inside gave it a wholesome, warm taste and texture. The Swedish meatballs were excellent quality, served with mashed potatoes, a cream sauce and some lingonberry jam that made it both filling, and comforting.

We had enough room for dessert and ordered the Apple Crumble served with vanilla ice-cream, the Salted Caramel Waffle, and the Oreo Cheesecake (which they served with a candle for the birthday boy). We also got a flat white. All three desserts came out quickly, and were very well done.

The Price Point

This meal for 5 came in at just under SGD160. For 5 people for a meal with beverages and dessert, this is really good value.

The Final Verdict

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Fika is a pleasant surprise in this district. It’s food is a little bit familiar, and a little bit different. It has an amazing ambience, and offers great value meals. We really enjoyed our visit here and would come back again. If you’re looking to meet up with friends or family for a casual meal, or to celebrate – give Fika a try.
