Hyang-To-Gol

Hyang-To-Gol is in Basement 2 of Raffles City in the food-court area, and is a great value Korean restaurant. They also have another outlet at the Amara Hotel.

Ambience, Service and the Staff

Singapore has a bit of a love affair with South Korean culture, and its food is no exception. Hyang-To-Gol is an understated Korean restaurant which offers staple favourites. I’ve been here a few times before at peak meal times, and it has always been full, and generally has a line forming outside.

Today, we decided to go in for an early dinner and were one of 3 tables that were being served.

We were a party of 2. I hear that one can make reservations via Chope but we just walked in, and were seated and provided with menus straight away by the friendly staff.

Hyang-To-Gol is comfortable with a typically understated decor. The bench seats are upholstered, offering adequate support. The tables for two were decent sized so that we weren’t short on space, and the chairs are comfortable and supportive.

The Food

Our party of 2 ordered the Hot Plate and BBQ set meals. We got the Beef Bulgogi set, and the Doaeji Bulgogi (BBQ Pork) set prepared extra spicy (which is a little like their Jaeyuk Bogum). For drinks, we ordered a hot barley tea and some iced water. They do charge for water here. We also ordered 2 sets of gyoza – each set is of 2 gyozas.

Their service was very quick. Drinks came out within 2 minutes, and food followed within 5 minutes of placing the order and was served piping hot. The hot plate sets are served with a set of 4 condiments – kimchee, squid, potato salad, and beans, along with seaweed soup. The portions are very generous. The meat is cooked to perfection. I can attest particularly to the spicy pork which was full flavoured without being overwhelming.

The gyozas took us by surprise. They were quite large, and ample. I am glad that we didn’t order more, although if we had the appetite, I suspect that we would.

The Price Point

Our meal of 2 set us back just under $45 which is amazing value.

The Final Verdict

Rating: 4 out of 5.

We have been regular patrons at Hyang-To-Gol. In our experience, they have consistently good food at a very competitive price. This is the sort of place that you visit to have a satisfying meal that won’t break the bank. It’s comfortable, low key, and has great service.

This is a great place to eat while you’re shopping, or to catch up for a casual meal with friends after work. I know that I’ll keep coming back. I recommend that you try them out!
