There are Thai Restaurants, and there are Thai Restaurants… this is the latter.
The Ambience, Service and Staff
Jim Thompson is in Dempsey and is perhaps one of Singapore’s nicest Thai Restaurants. It is housed in one of the converted colonial barracks and is tastefully decorated with a blend of traditional Thai decor and contemporary western. We were a party of 2 and were celebrating a birthday. We had made a reservation through Chope. The friendly staff greeted us on our arrival and ushered us to our table as we arrived. Menus were in place. Our table was in the centre aisle of the restaurant and gave us the opportunity to take in the decor and ambience.
The Food
We went with a starter and a couple of mains. For our starter, we got the Goong Hom Sabai — the Prawns wrapped with rice paper and yellow egg noodles, deep-fried and served with chili-plum dip. We supplemented this with our mains which consisted of the Gaeng Mussaman Neau — the Mussaman curry (with beef), and the Khao Phad Nam Lieb Gai — the Thai fried rice with minced chicken, black olives, cashewnuts, shallots and chilies. We also ordered a couple of drinks — a Thai Iced Tea and a fresh coconut water (straight out ot the coconut).
Our drinks came out first, within minutes. The Thai Iced Tea was especially well made, without too much ice. The Goong Hom Sabai followed. The prawns were large, and cooked perfectly, served with a plum sauce that accentuated their texture and flavour. The mains came just as we finished the prawns. The portions were large, and sufficient for 2 adults. The Mussamun curry had a full bodied flavour without being too spicy. The gravy was well balanced without too much coconut milk, and was the perfect accompaniment for the olive fried rice, which was beautifully presented, and had a gentle flavour.
The Price Point
We spent just under $130 for our meal which was great value for Dempsey. Portions are generous, and the service and ambience was amazing.
The Final Verdict
Jim Thompson is special. They definitely serve some of the best Thai food in Singapore. They offer amazing ambience, fantastic service, and great quality food. This is a great location for both lunch and dinner to celebrate a special occasion, or just catch up with people you care about.
