Leopold

We were feeling like eating something a little different and decided to try out Leopold tonight. It is a modern European restaurant that sits along Tanjong Pagar road.

Ambience, Service and the Staff

Tanjong Pagar has no lack of great restaurants, and it has a large collection Korean barbeques in a stretch where Leopold stands as the odd one out.

We were a party of 2. I made reservations via Chope. We also purchased Chope vouchers. You need to let the restaurant know that you’ll be using Chope vouchers by calling ahead. We were seated and provided with menus straight away by the friendly staff.

Leopold has a chic industrial decor with contrasting concrete, wood, and brass. The bench seats are upholstered and comfy, and the walls are decorated with artwork of breweries, and bottles of their own spirits. The restaurant leaves the front door wide open, and has an air-curtain to help with the air-conditioning indoors. It flows out to the outdoor area where people tend to congregate for drinks.

The Food

Our party of 2 ordered the signature Leopold sloe gin tonic, the Pork Collar, the Wiener Schnitzel, and a side of truffle fries. We also got a bottle of still water which is chargeable.

Drinks came out first. The Gin and Tonic is very good, and has a similarity to an aperol spritz with cirtusy undertones. It is distinctly darker than regular Gin and Tonics which are generally colourless.

Food came out very quickly, starting with our side of fries served with a side of barbecue sauce. They were fresh and hot – clearly straight out of the fryer. The pork collar followed almost immediately. The portion size was ample, served with sauerkraut and vegetables. The meat was well cooked, and tender. The schnitzel took a bit longer, and is similarly generous in portion size. It was served with a potato salad that was cold and had a tangy taste to it.

The fare served here is typical of food from Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. It is suited to delicate palates and stomachs. Portions are generous, the quality of food is great, and we were well looked after.

The Price Point

Our meal for 2 set us back just over $100. This is decent value for the quality of food that was on offer, the ambience, and the location of the restaurant.

The Final Verdict

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Leopold offers a warm ambience to meet with friends and family for a comfortable, intimate meal, or to catch up with friends and colleagues for drinks in the alfresco area. They offer something different from the rest of the fare that you’re likely to find in this stretch of restaurants.
