Mexican food is something that is close to my heart. It’s not Asian, and is spicy enough to tingle the taste buds. There are a few decent Mexican restaurants around Singapore, and Platypus Cantina is one of them.
Ambience, Service and the Staff
Platypus Cantina faces East Coast Road and is on the ground floor of the Santa Grand Hotel. I have visited it several times. They accept reservations via Chope. I’ve walked in a few times, but it’s a good idea to book ahead to avoid waiting – particularly in the evenings as this tends to be a popular spot for people to chat over drinks.
We’ve always been seated promptly upon entering, been provided with menus and served with water and cutlery by the friendly staff. The decor is very colourful and has the theme of the Mexican festival Dia De Los Muertos. Some of the lampshades are made from re-purposed sombreros.
They have outdoor seating at bar tables, some of which face the street. Indoors, there are a combination of single tables, large tables for groups, and booths which will seat up to 4 adults comfortably. The seats are sturdy. The booths are the most comfortable with upholstery and cushions.
The Food
We’ve eaten here several times and have a few favourites.
We often get a starter of nachos with some guacamole. The nachos are prepared fresh and hot, and the guacamole is smooth and mild with a slight zing from the tomatoes. The tortilla, corn and black bean soup is another of our favourites offering a comforting, full bodied corn soup with a gentle tang.
From their taco selection, we’d recommend the fish tacos. Simply put – they are unbeatable, with the fish being crispy, hot and flaky.
One of my personal favourite mains is Jospefina’s Enchiladas de pollo con salsa verde. This is a set of 3 very generous, mildly spiced chicken filled enchiladas, seasoned with jalapenos and topped with sour cream.
We’ve also tried the classic spaghetti and beef meatballs which are tasty and sufficient to fill one up.
The Oaxaca Hot Chicken and Corn Waffles is interesting – particularly the texture of the corn waffles which is distinct from regular waffles. It’s texture and savoury taste lends itself to a very satisfying meal.
The Price Point
Our bill for two usually comes up to between $35 to $50 for a party of two, without alcohol. This is amazing value for the location and ambience of the establishment, and quantity and quality of the food.
The Final Verdict
Platypus Kitchen offers awesome food at a great price point. It’s a great place to come and chill with friends, organise a first date, or just catch a casual meal. I’ve been a regular here and will continue to keep coming back.
