Sofra

Sofra is a Singapore institution. It was previously located at the Shaw Centre which is now closed for redevelopment, and has now moved to Marina Square.

Ambience, Service and the Staff

The restaurant is easy to get to, located on the 3rd floor of Millenia Walk. We were a party of 2 and had made reservations via Chope. We were seated and provided with menus straight away by the friendly staff.

Sofra’s location at the terrace level of Marina Square gives it some lovely views of the Singapore CBD Skyline, Esplanade Theaters, and South Beach. The restaurant is bathed in natural light and is decorated simply with sturdy, comfortable wooden furniture, and Middle Eastern lantern shades. There are lots of hard surfaces, so it can get a bit noisy, particularly at peak times.

The Food

We ordered a couple of starters and a couple of mains. For our starters, we went with the Hummus, and the Sasuka Eggplant Salad. For our mains, we ordered the Adana Kebab in lamb, and the Eggplant Kebab with Chicken. The restaurant charges for water at 50 cents per glass (non-refillable).

Our hummus came out with a slice of Turkish Bread, and we ordered some Pita Bread to supplement it. The hummus had a beautiful texture and was perfectly flavoured. The eggplant salad was particularly good. The pita bread was baked fresh and layered with sesame seeds that made it the perfect accompaniment to the hummus.

The mains followed. The kebabs were beautifully presented, and served with sides of caramelized onions, cabbage, couscous and vegetables. The meats are lightly spiced, and remain tender and juicy. As a personal preference, I felt that the minced chicken was better than the lamb – which in itself was very good. The roasted eggplant served with the kebab was beautifully cooked and almost melted in your mouth while its skin remain crispy.

The Price Point

Our bill came up to just around $85 for 2 people. This is good value for the quantity and quality of food, and the location of the restaurant.

The Final Verdict

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Sofra offers a great place to enjoy some authentic Turkish food. Their service is quick and they offer a decent price point. It’s great for small groups and families, and offers a wide variety of Turkish delicacies to choose from. I’ll be going back again.
