Supernova

Coming from the same group that brought us Apollo, Lunar and Neptune, Supernova is yet another a neighbourhood bistro along Tanjong Katong that has become a favourite of mine. This is a place that I have been to several times and go to regularly.

Ambience, Service and the Staff

I’ve been to Supernova for both brunch and dinner, and tend to prefer dinners there. This is simply a function of my daily routine, and not to say that they do not do a good breakfast. I generally go there with my wife. On one of our first visits, we made reservations over the phone, though one can do this over their website. Dog owners can dine with their dogs close by outdoors which are covered by a generous awning.

We were there on a Friday evening when the restaurant was at about 50% capacity. We had a table close to the bar and were immediately provided with water. Menus were provided at the table via a QR code where one orders and pays for their food via a web interface using Waitrr.

Supernova has the vibe of an upmarket speak-easy. It has wooden tones with an elegantly curved layout housed inside a corner unit on the edge of a main road, and a side street. The bar has to be their most interesting piece, with a distressed mirror behind their selection of drinks and stockpile of oat milk.

The Food

Supernova’s prices are very reasonable, as are their portions which are not too big. On the evening, we ordered the Mala Chicken Burger, and the Gorgonzola & Portobello Rigatoni. My wife also ordered a glass of wine.

Her drink came out first, within a few minutes, and food followed about 5 minutes later.

The Mala Chicken burger has become one of my staple favourites. Served with coin-hash and a lightly toasted bun, the crispy chicken is laced with Sichuan peppers to give it a burn that is tingly without being overwheming.

The Rigatoni has become my wife’s go to dish here. The mushrooms are generous, served alongside the pasta and a couple of slices of baguette, with a truffle undertone, laced with wallnuts.

The portions here are ample and will satisfy an adult without overwhelming them.

The Price Point

Dinner for the two of us which included a glass of wine came to around $60. If you were to take the food alone, this is typically around $50 which is great value.

The Final Verdict

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Supernova is an awesome, trendy cafe in the East that offers one a pet friendly place to catch up for breakfast, brunch, lunch or a casual dinner with loved ones, friends and family. Their portions are ample without being too expensive, and they consistently offer great service that I’ve experienced at their sister outlets. This is a place that I will recommend, and one that I continue to go back to!
