This is an amazing Australian café that’s a stone’s throw from Bugis, and on the edge of Jalan Besar.
The Ambience, Service and Staff
Symmetry is housed in the bottom of a shophouse and faces Victoria Street. It’s on a major bus route, walking distance from Bugis and around the corner from Arab Street. The exterior has a wooden deck and an al-fresco dining area covered by an awning that is sheltered from the main road by a hedged area. The interior is decorated in a warm, homely, and slightly bohemian style that would not be out of place in Brunswick in Melbourne. We had made a reservation through Chope. The friendly staff greeted us on our arrival and ushered us to our table as we arrived. Menus were in place. Our table was in a cosy little corner that gave us a sense of privacy. We were served water straight away, and the staff were attentive as they kept our glasses full throughout our visit.
The Food
We were a party of eight and ordered both food and hot beverages. Our beverages consisted of a couple of speculoos lattés, a couple of flat whites, a mocha, and a peppermint tea. For food, we ordered a Big Breakfast, the Eggs Benedict, a few of the Sarawak Black Pepper Burgers, the Char Siew Glazed Pork Burger, the Symmetry Home Made Waffles, and the Angus Beef Stroganoff Fusilli.
Our drinks came out within minutes. All the coffees were great and served with a biscuit. Their speculoos lattés were the centre of attraction, served with the crust of a cookie and cookie jam around the cup. Food followed about 5 minutes later. The Big Breakfast and the Eggs Benedict came out first. Both were served up in generous portions. The bacon was kept soft, and the hash browns were crispy. Portions were ample. The burgers followed. The Sarawak Black Pepper Burgers were particularly good. They were served with pickles and a large side of fries, with aioli and chilli sauce. They were topped with an egg and onion rings along with a black pepper sauce that offered an Asian twist to typically western fare. The Glazed Char Siu Pork burger was similarly served, offering a local twist to a classic. The Fusilli was offered as a generous serving and topped with button mushrooms, white wine cream, and arugula. The waffles were also generous in their portion size, served with strawberries, blueberries and raspberries, and a scoop of ice cream for someone craving some sweetness in their brunch.
The Price Point
We spent just over $280 for our meal for 8 which included beverages. This amounts to about $35 per person, which is great value for a café offering this quality of food, service and ambience. Chope vouchers are available. They allow the use of only 1 voucher per visit.
The Final Verdict
Symmetry is amazing! They’re a great place to meet friends on the weekend, or go out on a first date before continuing onto Jalan Besar. I loved their food and their service and will be back, and will recommend that you try it too!
