Vatos is Mexican with a Korean twist… or Korean wrapped in Mexican. Either way that you look at it, it brings together the best of both worlds. Vatos is known for it’s tacos that have a distinct Asian Twist
Ambience, Service and the Staff
Vatos is located in the ground floor of a building that used to be military barracks on South Beach. It is easy to walk past this restaurant, and you need to know that it is here.
I have visited this restaurant numerous times. During my most recent visit, we were a party of 2. We had made our reservation over Chope.
We arrived a little early, and the restaurant did not have our regular table available, but seated us at a high table promising to reseat us once our table became available. We chose to remain at the high table.
Vatos has a very urban environment. Exposed faux-brick work and exposed ceilings add to the atmosphere of a laid back watering hole which serves great tacos on Route 66. There is seating around the bar which offers a great view of the bar-tender mixing drinks.
Seating is on low café tables and chairs. The kitchen area is visible from the dining area.
The staff are courteous, helpful and attentive and have always taken great care of us, every time we have visited.
The Food
Vatos is known for its tacos and margaritas. It has quite the selection of tacos – chicken, pork, fish and beef.
They offer the first set of chips and salsa on the house.
On my most recent visit to Vatos, we had ordered the Baja fish tacos, the chimichurri chicken tacos, the three amigos set of dips and nachos, and the tamales.
Our food came out in 10 minutes.
The chips served with the three amigos had come out fresh from the fryer and tasted heavenly with the dips. The tamales were piping hot, also having been freshly cooked. The pulled pork inside was lightly seasoned providing a precursor for the main course.
The chimichurri chicken tacos were served in a soft shell, with ample vegetables. The Baja fish tacos were the clear winner for the evening. The soft flaky flesh of the fish inside their battered exterior provides an pleasant contrasting texture once you get through the soft taco exterior.
The Price Point
We spent approximately just over $50 for two people. We didn’t consume any alcohol. This is quite good value for the amount of food that we had ordered, the location, and the ambience of restaurant.
The Final Verdict
Vatos is about tacos and margaritas – and it excels at both. This is a great place to meet friends and colleagues after work, or to catch up with small groups. I’ve been here several times before, and will continue to eat here. If you haven’t eaten here, you’re missing out!
